Young Dancer Expectations/Requirements
• Dancers must be 3 years old or must have taken a summer session to determine readiness.
• A dancer must be potty-trained to take dance class. If a dancer has not developed this control, it is hard to expect them to be disciplined enough to follow directions in a dance class.
In addition, a dancer needs to be able to:
• Say their name when asked by the teacher. If your child cannot say both first and last name or is difficult to understand, please introduce your child personally to the teacher the first day.
• Separate from the adult bringing them to class. We certainly understand that many children have separation anxiety, but dancers typically overcome their fear quickly and enjoy their dance classes immensely. This will also require some trust on the part of the parents, so that the children know they are safe with us.
• Understand and follow studio rules. These are mainly safety rules, such as no running in the studio, or courtesy rules, such as using an inside voice, listening to teachers, or not pushing in lines, etc.
If your dancer is (socially) ready to dance, YOU can help them get (physically) ready to begin classes by:
• Making sure your dancer has the appropriate dancewear and supplies. Make sure their name is in all shoes.
• Practicing putting on dance shoes at home. Never allow your dancer to wear dance shoes outdoors.
• Arriving to the studio in a timely manner (not more than 10 minutes early or 10 min late).
Once your child is in the classroom, and is properly dressed for class, we ask that parents leave the dance room. For your child's benefit, it is best that a parent isn't visible to allow the teacher and dancer to be acquainted with one another.
Level Advancement
Advancement from one class level to the next is done through an evaluation process and is determined by our instructors. Progression is determined by the student's physical and mental preparedness for the challenges of the next level. Our curriculum is based on students spending an average of two years (or four semesters) in each level.
Typically when beginning at the Studio, you will be assigned a class by age, then after a period of evaluation, be moved to the most appropriate level for your ability.
