By the very nature, sports, including gymnastics and other activities available at Tuscaloosa Tumbling Tides, carry a risk of physical injury. No matter how careful the participant and the coach are, no matter how many spotters are used, no matter what height is used or what landing equipment utilized, the risk cannot be eliminated. The risk of injury includes minor injuries such as bruises and more serious injuries such as broken bones, dislocations, muscle pulls, and concussion.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. Even a "ding," "getting your bell rung," or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreation ctivity. If a student is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or meet they shall be removed from participation at the time of the injury and may not return to participate until the student has received a written clearance from a licensed health care provider.
The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even death from landing or falls on the back, neck or head. Sports, including gymnastics or any activity that involves motion, rotation and height in a unique environment, carries with it a reasonable assumption of risk.
