Our junior geologists investigate the layers of the earth, their properties, and how and why they formed. Students then learn the difference between rocks and minerals. They learn how the three main types of rocks are formed and how they change over time in a process called the rock cycle. Students sort samples of common rocks according to their type. They learn special characteristics of each, and become familiar with specimens of Earth’s most common rocks. Students spend several weeks studying minerals, learning what makes a mineral a mineral, procedures for testing mineral properties, identifying a variety of minerals through experimentation and testing, and studying minerals with microscopes. Students will learn the five characteristics of a mineral. They will then use these characteristics to determine whether different specimens are minerals or not. 09/05/2024 01/15/2025 499.00

Register High School Geometry (year-long course) - Spring '24 In this yearlong class we will focus on understanding plane and space relationships. One thing that many students find they like is that geometry is less abstract and more visual than algebra – easier to 'see' what is going on in the problems. For some of this class we will focus on what people usually picture when they think of geometry: topics like area, perimeter and volume, measuring angles, and using triangles to find the heights of tree and buildings. You know, stuff you can use in the real world out there. About 2/3 of the class covers problems that are not designed to necessarily be directly usable in the real world, but are instead exercises so students can explore and practice the process of solving problems in general. We will spend a significant amount of time on proofs and logic, which helps students consider how we know the things we know, and how to build on knowledge we’ve learned before ..... 02/01/2024 05/23/2024 499.00

The Art & History of Film (year-long course) In this intro to film class, students will gain a deeper understanding of how films come together to move us as an audience as they begin to look at film through a critical lens (just like they do with literature). Through weekly discussions and creative assignments, students will explore how elements like narrative structure, mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound design, visual effects, and music help to shape a film. Students will keep a weekly film journal, exploring these elements in a film of their own choosing as well as weekly films watched outside of class. Some suggested films include Hugo by Martin Scorsese, Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock, and Hero by Zhang Yimou. This course will explore the evolution of cinema from its inception to the modern era. Students will follow the history of American film--from the silent era, the rise of the studio system, the birth of the blockbuster, and the growth of independent cinema--as well as learn about filmmaking around the world 09/09/2024 01/16/2025 475.00
